Dear DI Community,

The HL7 Gender Harmony project (confluence.hl7.org/display/VOC/The+Gender+Harmony+Project) kicked off yesterday and members of DICOM WG 6 were in attendance to start explaining some of the DI use cases that have arisen that are the key drivers for this work.

There is an HL7 Community meeting today (Tuesday June 4) at 1200 hrs ET (meeting details can be found here: infocentral.infoway-inforoute.ca/en/news-events/event-calendar/icalrepeat.detail/2019/06/04/2769/165/hl7-canada-community-call) where an updated on this work will be provided verbally (just a 10 minute agenda item).

It would be great to hear about the DI use cases around sex and gender identify here in Canada and what is being used.

Please join the HL7 community. I am going to share any updates around the Gender Harmony project there.

Thank you.

Regards,

Andrea

Dear DI Community,

Please see below announcement from DICOM regarding gender and sex encoding.

In addition, HL7 International is also working to define sex and gender. More information about the "gender harmony" project can be found here .

Dear DICOM Community

I want to inform you that during the May 13th WG-06 Base Standard CP t-con, the group members reached consensus to create a WG-06 Ad-Hoc Group to work on CP-1927 Patient Sex and Gender clarifications. There are some issues that need further and deeper discussion and require more than just the standard CP process.

Main reason is that more and more rules are coming in that require a more specific classification of Gender than just the current “M”, “F”, “O”.
We would like to define one or more attributes (coded?) to allow systems to be able to confirm to local requirements.
As there are different requirements / rules for several of the places already the method needs to be flexible enough without being unspecified.

The name of this ad-hoc group is WG-06-Gender-and-Sex-Encoding-Ad-Hoc; and the listserv email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Wim Corbijn, Philips and Rob Horn, Fairhaven Technologies, will be co-chairs of this subgroup group.
If you interested in this topic/issue and wish to be added to this roster, please email me directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or fill out the form on the DICOM website: www.dicomstandard.org/participate/ .

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kind regards,
Luiza
