LAWRENCE TARBOX, PH.D.
Assistant Professor
Department of Biomedical Informatics
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences
Bio statement
Dr. Tarbox began working with the ACR-NEMA 2.0 standard in 1986, creating Ethernet-based interfaces (in lieu of the 50 pin interface specified) into digital angiography systems for external post-processing of data, installed at research institutions in Europe and the Americas. He joined the DICOM Standards Committee and several working groups in January of 1993, and was the initial editor for parts 2, 13, 15, and 19. He also was lead editor on nine supplements and was a major contributor to dozens of other supplements. Dr. Tarbox is currently the user co-chair for WG-14 (Security), WG-23 (Application Hosting), and WG-29 (Education, Communication, and Outreach). In addition, he served as chair of the organizing committees for 3 of the DICOM International Conferences and Seminars (2013 Bengaluru, 2010 Rio de Janeiro, 2008 Chengdu), and chaired the program committee for the 2003 Anniversary Conference in Baltimore. He currently is the voting representative to the DICOM Standards Committee for the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). Dr. Tarbox also serves as the chair of AAPM’s Imaging Informatics Sub-Committee, and participates in multiple AAPM committees and groups. He participates in IHE activities and at one time served as the liaison between DICOM and ISO. Currently Dr. Tarbox is on the faculty of the Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at UAMS, where he is the track director for the Imaging Informatics degree/certificate program. Dr. Tarbox came to DBMI three years ago with over thirty years’ experience in both the commercial and academic research sectors, with responsibilities ranging from basic research to product development to business planning to deployment in real-world settings. Most of his career has been focused on providing tools for the acquisition, processing, archiving, and management of medical data, with an emphasis on imaging data. This experience includes applying high performance computing resources, such as GPUs and parallel processing, both on custom-built and generic hardware, to enhance and speed up image and data processing algorithms. He directs the center for high-performance computing at UAMS and is a member of the UAMS IT Infrastructure Steering Committee and Research IT Advisory group. Dr. Tarbox is co-investigator or consultant on numerous research projects, including the family of projects surrounding The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA), a large, publicly accessible repository of cancer images and related data, where he serves as the lead architect. He is also the principal investigator for the Chest Imaging Archive for the CDC-NIOSH.
