Hi,

Unfortunately the SMART on FHIR - CDS Hooks Workstream call for this Friday is cancelled. Just a reminder that we'll revisit the discussion on what it's going to take to move the industry in Canada towards SMART on FHIR adoption at the call on May 25. There is a google doc to start capturing ideas on these activities here: docs.google.com/document/d/1n_-_mcx8_SddZevqARDW2g4AuiBj9MaJlx_DV-N2Psc/edit#heading=h.rtro7hivkabo
Thanks to Mike Savage and Alex Goel for already adding ideas.

Hi everyone!

As a follow-up to the Action Item declared in the previous post in this thread (Notes from April 13th SoF Meeting), please use the following link to access the google doc which will serve as a brainstorming forum for our business-level Communications and Action Plan, aimed at promoting and socializing SMART on FHIR:

docs.google.com/document/d/1n_-_mcx8_SddZevqARDW2g4AuiBj9MaJlx_DV-N2Psc/edit?usp=sharing

The doc is pretty straightforward. For reference here, the intent at this point is really for us to jot down the groups/forums where we should be presenting the SMART on FHIR work, and what the key messages would be for each respective occasion. As well, there is a list toward the bottom of the doc where we can jot down any other concrete deliverables/action items we should be producing for promotional purposes (i.e. promotional videos, purchasing guides, etc.).

Reply in this thread if you have any questions!

Thank you,

-Michael Savage

Hi all,

Please see below for the minutes/highlights from the April 13th SMART on FHIR - CDS Hooks workstream call:

Attendees:

Attila Farkas
Harsh Sharma
Gavin Tong
Igor Sirkovich
Joel Francis
Piers Hollott
Shamil Nizamov
Sisira de Silva
Tim Berezny
Gavin Tong
Nima Hierat

Standing Action Item

• Create, maintain, and act upon a Business-level Communications and Action Plan; Gavin and Mike Savage to create initial document template and populate with initial ideas and then distribute link to group

Summary

• Reviewed the SoF content published on Infoscribe thus far:
• 3 Deployment Scenarios identified:
o Full-feature web application; also applies to the ‘ultimate’ SoF model, namely a complete SoF ‘app store’ which acts as the container and
deployment model for the 3rd party apps
o Single-page web application
o Native application
• Suggestion to do a small demo implementation of each of the above scenarios, and then could author the respective implementation guides in Simplifier.net
• Common question from interested parties: how do I get started?
o Suggests a need for a “My first SoF Application” and/or “My first SoF Application Launcher” guide(s)

Next Steps

• Everyone involved with SoF should read through the content currently available on Infoscribe re: SoF

Questions/Comments

• Grappling with the proverbial “chicken or the egg” issue
o Source systems owners (EHR vendors and indirectly the health organizations using them) need explicit proof that SoF will work, and its
value; BUT, the potential developers of SoF applications need expressions of interest from these same stakeholders before building these
applications
• Need to communicate that SoF is not just a logical evolution of standards, it’s actually a paradigm shift in digital behavior
o The EMR/EHR vendor becomes the FHIR server with the SoF APIs
• We need to have a focus on socializing SoF with business and market influencers
• Need to get SoF as an agenda item at Digital Health Canada, CHI Partnership, Vendor groups, etc.
o Ex: ITAC Health, CIO Forum, etc.
o Should explore forums outside the conventional digital health / health IT zones, like Ontario Centres of Excellence, Health Quality
Transformation, tech community panel discussions
• Need to make this a standing action / business item
o Develop a purchasing guide for SoF-/FHIR-enabled EHR solutions / source systems
o Communications plan to promote interest and adoption at various levels of the health system

Additional Notes

• Next meeting is Friday April 27th, 2pm (the day after FHIR North)
• Agenda will focus on debriefs following FHIR North and Apps for Health
