About

What is the Health Terminologies Community?

The Health Terminologies Community is a place to share and learn about new and existing implementations of, and updates to, health-related terminologies, terminology subsets, and classification systems used in Canada.

Members actively contribute to discussions and share information and advice related to the implementation, development, maintenance, and use of multiple vocabularies in various health-related projects.

This community is responsive to its membership, actively encouraging, welcoming, and relying on the submission of discussion topics, agenda items, and other items such as education and vendor engagement from its members.

The community will engage and collaborate with other groups or InfoCentral communities on broader related topics when relevant.

Major reference terminologies and classification systems of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • SNOMED CT
  • LOINC/pCLOCD
  • CCDD (Canadian Clinical Drug Dataset)
  • ICD-10-CA
  • ATC

Canada Health Infoway is the National Release Centre (NRC) for SNOMED CT, pCLOCD, and HL7 in Canada.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is responsible for the development and publication of ICD-10-CA (the Canadian modification of ICD-10), as well as CCI (Canadian Classification of Health Interventions).

To become a member of this community select Join Group in the Group Menu.

If you have an idea for a community, working group, or project that will drive interoperability forward, let us know! Send your suggestions to standards@infoway-inforoute.ca.

Dear all, As per all previous announcements providing early visibility of the Concrete Domains proposal, SNOMED International are proceeding as planned with the introduction of the new Concrete Domains content in the July 2021 International Edition release package. Following on from the September 2020 and February 2021 technical previews of the impending Concrete Domains changes (for which no adverse feedback was received), SNOMED International are now implementing the changes in the July 2021 International Edition Production release. This contains drug concept strengths and counts expressed as concrete values in a new Relationships file. The RF2 Release package for July 2021 is therefore planned to incorporate the following changes: • Inferred Relationship file changes: o All relationships for values of strength and count for medical products inactivated o All relationships for attributes of strength and count for medicinal products inactivated o New relationships for new concept model data attributes of strength, count, product name, and supplier for medicinal products will be added • Stated OWL Axiom file changes: o Existing drug concept axioms updated to use concrete values o Existing strength and count attribute types will be inactivated, replaced with new ones using the same FSNs. • New Inferred "Relationship Concrete Values" files: o New concrete values relationship files added to the RF2 package structure, containing all new relationships for values of strength and count for medical products:  sct2_RelationshipConcreteValues_Delta_INT_20210731.txt  sct2_RelationshipConcreteValues_Full_INT_20210731.txt  sct2_RelationshipConcreteValues_Snapshot_INT_20210731.txt • MRCM file changes: o MRCM includes new rows to indicate that the new attribute types are expected to take a concrete domain - specifically numbers - as target values. Please refer to the final July 2021 International Edition Release Notes (which will be released on 31st July 2021) for full details of the confirmed changes. If you can foresee any critical issues with the transition plans, or have any questions regarding any of these upcoming changes, please contact SNOMED International immediately at support@snomed.org (and cc standards@infoway-inforoute.ca) with “Concrete Domains transition question” in the subject line. Kind regards, Andrew Atkinson | Release Manager

SNOMED International is pleased to announce the launch of a new report that details the value each of its many stakeholder groups can experience by implementing SNOMED CT, the most comprehensive global language for health terms. This report builds on the work captured in a series of videos completed in 2020 in which a New Zealand health board highlights the advances it has made in realizing its vision of a connected, integrated system by using SNOMED CT. The report, titled SNOMED CT: Articulating Stakeholder Value, was developed over the past year as part of our efforts to meet our 2020-2025 Strategy commitments and to realize our vision of better health and improved patient outcomes worldwide. It identifies where and how SNOMED CT is used, providing an end-to-end perspective of the entire universe of SNOMED CT users, including Members, policy makers, care providers, patients and citizens, researchers and knowledge producers, implementers, vendors and collaboration partners, and expands and extends our existing value propositions to each of those groups. It also lays out the pathway to realizing the full value of SNOMED CT when embedded in a clinical information system, a health data and analytics platform or an interoperability solution. ... Stay tuned for a more detailed case for investment in SNOMED CT later this summer.
