About

What is the Health Terminologies Community?

The Health Terminologies Community is a place to share and learn about new and existing implementations of, and updates to, health-related terminologies, terminology subsets, and classification systems used in Canada.

Members actively contribute to discussions and share information and advice related to the implementation, development, maintenance, and use of multiple vocabularies in various health-related projects.

This community is responsive to its membership, actively encouraging, welcoming, and relying on the submission of discussion topics, agenda items, and other items such as education and vendor engagement from its members.

The community will engage and collaborate with other groups or InfoCentral communities on broader related topics when relevant.

Major reference terminologies and classification systems of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • SNOMED CT
  • LOINC/pCLOCD
  • CCDD (Canadian Clinical Drug Dataset)
  • ICD-10-CA
  • ATC

Canada Health Infoway is the National Release Centre (NRC) for SNOMED CT, pCLOCD, and HL7 in Canada.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) is responsible for the development and publication of ICD-10-CA (the Canadian modification of ICD-10), as well as CCI (Canadian Classification of Health Interventions).

To become a member of this community select Join Group in the Group Menu.

If you have an idea for a community, working group, or project that will drive interoperability forward, let us know! Send your suggestions to standards@infoway-inforoute.ca.

Linda Monico created a new discussion in Health Terminologies
At the March 19, 2019 meeting of the Health Terminologies community, a question was raised about whether or not Clinical LOINC codes were added to the pCLOCD given that there are approximately 180 clinical LOINC document codes in the pCLOCD today. The existing Clinical LOINC codes were added to the pCLOCD at the request of now retired SCWG 2 in support of the pan-Canadian version 3 messages. SCWG 2 wanted concepts that were represented in the Master Terminology Worksheet (MTW) to be reflected in the pCLOCD. In 2015, Infoway began to receive more requests to add Clinical LOINC codes to LOINC and we asked stakeholders about adding the new concepts to the pCLOCD. Implementers requested that these LOINC codes not be added to the pCLOCD going forward. It was expressed that outside of the LOINC attributes, the rest of the fields in the pCLOCD were not relevant and adding these codes would increase the overall maintenance burden for implementers without providing any additional value. This information will be added to the pCLOCD page on InfoCentral so that it is well documented and communicated going forward. We thank eHO for raising the question and the gap in our external documentation and communications.
