April 14, 2020 Sex and Gender Working Group Agenda and Meeting Notes are now posted to the documents folder, link here:
infocentral.infoway-inforoute.ca/en/resources/docs/sex-gender/sex-gender-meetings
They can also be found below:
1. Welcome
2. Presentation – University of Victoria: Professor Francis Lau: Environmental Scan of Sex and Gender Definitions in Electronic Health Record (HER) Systems
Dr. Lau provided an overview of the draft paper, along with the preliminary results and invited feedback and comments. Content included and explanation/working definition of terms, purpose, methods, initial results including summaries of sex and gender definitions in Canadian EHR systems, expanded definitions and a summary of related standards. Preliminary findings were discussed and have important implications for the Canadian heath care systems and for standards in general. Key action items, including reaching consensus and developing a coordinated action plan, were outlined.
3. Presentation – University of Victoria: Marcy Antonio PhD(c): Rapid Review of Sex and Gender Information Practices in Electronic Health Records
Marcy Antonio provided information about the rapid review protocol, some key preliminary findings, and discussed an exemplar paper. This presentation outlined some of the uses of information (practices) in EHRs, with a focus on key areas such policy, practice, research, community and implementation with an eye to developing an implementation strategy for modernized information practices that support equity and facilitate successful implementation by addressing gaps and challenges.
4. Discussion
Rigorous discussion regarding the importance of equity, challenges with privacy, ownership, and ensuring that legacy data remain intact, as well as current practice in AB (the use of an organ inventory) followed, as well as some question as to who the target audience for the publication ought to be. Additional questions implicate the broader treatment of sex and gender concepts in federal and provincial systems like RCMP, Corrections, First Nations data and National Defense, need to quantify current health inequities and identify current implementation challenges in the literature and strategies for addressing them. Critical considerations around patient and individual privacy and confidentiality, and patient rights, were raised. Bigotry and stigma will need to be addressed, and practices will need to be developed around information management and self-identification.
Francis can be contacted with regard to the environmental scan.
Marcy has taken the feedback and will be incorporating it into the rapid review.
5. Other Business
Gender Harmony Project information. First CIHR Stakeholder Consultation Meeting April 28, 2020 at 12 ET / 9 PT. Reminder will be posted.
6. Adjournment
