There is a standard FHIR extension of preferred language www.hl7.org/fhir/extension-patient-preferencetype.html, which you could use.

The (in my opinion rather poorly thought through) interpreter-required extension can also be used www.hl7.org/fhir/extension-patient-interpreterrequired.html.

If you need something beyond those, you may have to define your own extensions. However, it seems like a useful request to bring to HL7 or to CA Baseline.

Hello,

Has anyone attempted to capture a patient's preferred official language and mother tongue? I was trying to model this within the Patient Resource by slicing the communication element but realized there was no discriminator value that could be leveraged. Does anyone have any experience with modelling the capture of these values?

Thanks,

Inderpal
