I’d like to understand the next step of this ISO international standard for the Identification and Exchange of Immunization Data Elements as well as how it would impact Canadian Jurisdictions. Also you mentioned that it’s based on the CVC, now with NVC to be rolled out next April, will there be an impact on this standard?

I am very happy to inform this community of the progress of the ISO international standard for the Identification and Exchange of Immunization Data Elements. It has gone through 2 committee ballots, harmonized with the international standards representing broader drug data elements and now ready for a formal Technical Specification ballot within ISO TC 215.

The reason this is so awesome is that it was led by Canada and more specifically leveraged from our own Canadian Vaccine Catalogue which as most of you know started with Ontario and now used in several jurisdictions.

This standard was initiated to provide Public Health stakeholders working with immunization information to have a structured view of their data that is aligned with technical stakeholders who are very familiar with HL7 and other message standards. This document will enable effective and efficient interaction between Public Heath and technical stakeholders in the planning of digital health solutions with immunization data. The data represented in interoperability standards such as HL7 FHIR does not cover all frequently encountered immunization management use cases. This includes the data elements required for an immunization registry and the level of data element definition detail to enable consistent understanding and application.

The standard includes a data element structure that includes:
o A formal definition
o Business requirements and notes that include dependencies to other data as applicable, synonyms etc.
o The meaning of missing data
o The data element format such as String, Coded, Date and Boolean.
o Example values

It also identifies the data elements by the following use cases
-Populate an Immunization Registry
-Record and/or Share a Current Immunization Event
-Record and/or Share a Historic Immunization Event
-Create and/or Share an Immunization History
-Create an Immunization Reminder
-Create Anonymized Immunization Reports
-Schedule a New Immunization Event
