Enterprise Imaging Webinar: Privacy and Patient Health Data #2 – Health Data Provider and Researcher Perspectives

Group: Enterprise Imaging
Download as iCal file
Friday, March 25, 2022, 12:00pm - 01:00pm ET
by Jason Nagels

When: Mar 25, 2022 12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)

Healthcare providers, professionals and researchers are required to be good custodians of health information of patients. Our patients’ privacy must be protected. Paramount to the effective delivery of healthcare is the access to personal health information for those who need to know to provide care. Additionally, when collecting and using your personal health information measures must be in place to insure the privacy and confidentiality of the information is protected. The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine-Learning (ML) is showing that AI in Medical Imaging is requiring the “availability of high-quality image data for testing and validation. Open access data sharing is critical to enable adequate sampling of the human population and the wide variety of disease states. It is equally critical to protect patient privacy and to comply with national and international regulations governing protected or sensitive health information and personally identifiable information” (Data Sharing and Patient Privacy in the World of AI, Hot Topic session, RSNA 2021).

The topic of Privacy and Access to healthcare data has been introduced by members of our community frequently as a desired topic for our webinars. To suitably address this complex subject and the wide spectrum of perspectives, we are planning a series of three (3) one-hour webinars.

The second in this webinar series, Privacy and Patient Health Data – Health Data Provider and Researcher Perspectives

  • Researcher Viewpoint – Jeremy Petch (PhD, MA, BA(h)), Director, CREATE (CentRE for dAta science and digiTal hEalth) at Hamilton Health Sciences
    • Dr. Jeremy Petch is Director of Digital Health Innovation at Hamilton Health Sciences and an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto and the Division of Cardiology at McMaster University. He is the founder of CREATE (CentRE for dAta science and digiTal hEalth), a multidisciplinary research and innovation team with expertise in health system operations, data engineering, data science, software engineering and interoperability. Prior to joining HHS, he led St. Michael’s Hospital’s transformation into a data-driven organization, through the deployment of an advanced data and analytics infrastructure and co-founding the Li Ka Shing Centre for Healthcare Analytics Research and Training (LKS-CHART), which is home to a team of data scientists with specialization in machine learning, simulation modeling and natural language processing. Dr. Petch was a core member of CADTH’s Health Technology Expert Review Panel from 2015 to 2021 and is the co-lead of the Digital Health Secretariat of the Hamilton Ontario Health Team.
  • Health Data User Viewpoint – Alistair Johnson (BEng (Biomedical/Medical Engineering)), Hosptial for Sick Children, Toronto
    • Dr. Johnson is a Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children. He received his Bachelor of Biomedical and Electrical Engineering at McMaster University and successfully read for a DPhil at the University of Oxford. Dr. Johnson has worked in machine learning and healthcare for over a decade, strives to overcome barriers to data access. His work on MIMIC-III demonstrates the immense potential of publicly available data. Dr. Johnson’s research focuses on enabling healthcare research, including the development of new database structures tailored for healthcare, algorithms for deidentification of rich clinical data, and tools for assessing data quality.
