Introduction to Object Identifier (OID) and Uniform Resource Identifier (URI)

Presenter: Cindy Jiang, Lead, Standards – Data Exchange, eHealth Ontario

This beginner level education session will provide an overview of two types of identifiers commonly used in health care data exchange – object identifier (OID) and uniform resource identifier (URI).

Pan-Canadian Standards use OIDs to distinguish between objects by assigning a numeric string that enables other systems to understand the unique information that is being shared between various systems. A URI is used to identify things on the semantic web. It is easier to read and can be a name and/or locator.

Join us to learn more about OIDs and URIs, including information about the background, structure, associated policies and how they are used in Ontario's electronic health records.
