A collaborative effort of many national organizations has lead to the creation of a new patient tool.

"Opioids for pain after surgery: your questions answered", led by ISMP Canada, is based on the 5 Questions to Ask about your Medications template.

Find the copies at:

English: www.ismp-canada.org/download/OpioidStewardship/OpioidsAfterSurgery-EN.pdf
French: www.ismp-canada.org/download/OpioidStewardship/OpioidsAfterSurgery-FR.pdf

Share this within your organization to increase awareness of proper opioid usage when prescribed post surgery.

I just wanted to share an initiative by Health Quality Ontario.

They have created a individualized report called MyPractice Primary Care.

It provides data to family physicians regarding opioids and benzodiazepine prescribing, cancer screening and diabetes management.
Other aspects of healthcare usage are also included.

Practice improvement ideas are also included.
Check it out at: www.hqontario.ca/Quality-Improvement/Guides-Tools-and-Practice-Reports/Primary-Care

What are other provinces doing to increase awareness of opioid prescribing habits?

Take this opioid quiz developed by Canadian Deprescribing Network. For consumers and healthcare professionals

They provide the answers after the quiz, and have incorporated many of the ISMP Canada videos and tools.

Share this with your patients and colleagues.

The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) has released an annual report that outlines the contributions and progress that the signatories of the Joint Statement of Action to Address the Opioid Crisis have made on their commitments. You can find the report here:

Joint Statement of Action to Address the Opioid Crisis: A Collective Response (Annual Report 2016–2017)

CCSA's website also has some great opioid resources and past reports.

Kind regards,
Seema

Great newsletter from ISMP Canada with tips on the risks of Opioids and how prescribers, pharmacists and patients can use the included infographic to prevent or minimize harm from opioids.

It also talks about the morphine milligram equivalents and some of the challenges.

Please take the time to read this newsletter .

Thanks

This is a great read, shared by Kaiser Permanente, showing how they implemented a series of baby steps, over a 5 year period to achieve success in safer opioid prescribing.

They include a table that outlines the interventions taken as well as the metrics they used to defined success.
A number of interventions were integrated into the EHR to support clinical decisions.

Click here to get their report.

What has your organization implemented and measured to monitor success with safer opioid prescribing?
Please share!
