The tooling working stream has been absent lately mainly due to some WIP items, the FHIR North Connectathon and now the upcoming HL7 International meeting. I wanted to give you guys an update that the connectathon at Mohawk College went very well and there is lots to share in its aftermath. Unfortunately we need to skip this and next week's calls again as quite a few of us are travelling to the HL7 WG meeting starting on the 5th lasting until 12th. It would be a good idea to reconvene on Friday, May 19th to recap our status. We could also do a brief overview of connectathon experiences from both events. Stay tuned and watch for the event schedule coming soon.

Survey results are starting to arrive, hence we set up a consolidated view. You can check out the feedback so far by going to this link . Please contribute with your personal experience or knowledge in case you have already been exposed to FHIR. We will use all this feedback to inform future tooling decisions.

Hi everyone, status update. We've had a really good Tooling meeting today where we reviewed the general direction of the tooling stack and agreed on a number of principles to be followed. There is a recognition that the current sketch of the stack has a strong RESTful focus, which is fine since most of the work happened in this area, however, other FHIR interaction paradigms should also be accommodated by whatever we try to do, namely messages, documents and services.
Overall there is no disagreement with continuing down the current path, with a cautionary note from Lloyd to not diverge from International work. The intent is to work with the community to find the right combination of tools that does not diverge while meeting our desire to provide value to integrators. As we're getting deeper and more focused on tools for purpose we will be able to weigh them for their merit in supporting the larger mandate and decisions will be made at that level.
To get started, a survey has been created to collect your experience with tooling in FHIR. The categories listed in the tooling stack diagram are present in the survey and the ask is to please go and provide your input on what works, what doesn't, where could things be improved and where there is a lack of any proper tooling. I will collect these replies, normalize and publish an ongoing knowledge base of solutions and then we can start building a stack from these with whatever else needs to happen to make them better. More to come next week, please do the survey

FHIR does publish XML schemas, and in STU 3 we publish JSON schemas too. And there's a version of the XML schemas that's intended to be code-generation friendly. However, all such schemas are at the resource level, not the profile level. Most constraints made in profiles can't be enforced by schemas (vocabulary binding, slicing, FHIRPath invariants, etc.), so schemas at this level are of limited utility. The notion of code-generation based on profiles has been on the radar for quite a while, but I'm not aware of much that's happened in this space yet. You might raise the question on chat.fhir.org
