As advised in previous Briefing Notes, SNOMED International is planning to increase the maximum length of Fully Specified Name (FSN) and Synonym descriptions from 255 characters to 4096 characters. The primary benefit is to ensure SNOMED-CT remains flexible to accommodate future terming requirements, particularly for medicinal products.

This Briefing Note confirms the transition plan, and provides the timelines for implementation.
