interRAI Assessment Instruments

interRAI Assessment Instruments                                                     CAS *

The interRAI assessment instruments are a suite of clinical instruments that share core data items and promote standardization and continuity of care through a common language across health care sectors. These instruments have undergone rigorous research and testing by interRAI to ensure the reliability and validity of the assessment items. Improvements to person-centred care are directly impacted by outputs generated when an assessment is completed. These outputs provide clinicians, managers and policy-makers with evidence-based information for planning and measuring care, understanding populations, and improving overall quality of care and of the health care system.

Home care and related assessment instruments:

  • interRAI Home Care (HC) and its predecessor Resident Assessment Instrument-Home Care (RAI-HC)
  • interRAI Contact Assessment (CA)
  • interRAI Community Health Assessment (CHA)
  • interRAI Palliative Care (PC)

Long-term care assessment instruments:

  • interRAI Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCF) and its predecessor Resident Assessment Instrument–Minimum Data Set 2.0 (RAI-MDS 2.0)

Mental health assessment instruments:

  • interRAI Mental Health (MH) and its predecessor Resident Assessment Instrument-Mental Health (RAI-MH)
  • interRAI Community Mental Health (CMH)

Business Functions

The interRAI assessment data is used to support frontline delivery of care by providers/clinicians and health system decisions by managers, policy planners and researchers. This evidence-based information is generated upon completion of an assessment instrument and can be used for planning and measuring care, understanding populations, and improving overall quality of care and of the health care system.

* Status Definitions

Canadian Draft for Use (CDFU) - The standard has been developed but it may or may not be implemented or be in use. The standard is considered ready to be used by early adopters: however, change is probable as stakeholders begin using the standard in implementations.

Canadian Approved Standards (CAS) - The standard is in use for the purpose(s) or context(s) for which it was intended. Only those parts of the standard that have been implemented or are in use can progress for consideration as CAS. This decision point signifies that the standard has reached a level of stability and is comprehensive enough such that major changes are not expected.
