Canada to Host ISO/TC 215 Meeting in Toronto, Oct. 20–24, 2025 — A Global Forum for Digital Health Standards

ISO International, Standards Council of Canada, Canada Health Infoway, and CIHI are proud to host the international ISO/TC 215 meeting in Toronto from October 20–24, 2025, at the Amazon Web Services (AWS) office, bringing together global experts to advance standards for health informatics, digital health, and genomics. The week-long gathering will feature technical sessions, working-group meetings, plenaries, and collaborative discussions, with an expected 140 international experts from 25 countries. This event is a high-visibility opportunity for Canada to showcase its leadership in interoperability, privacy, security, and clinical content standards.

What is ISO/TC 215?

ISO/TC (Technical Committee) 215 is the global digital health and informatics standards body, leading the way for coherent and consistent exchange and use of health data, information, and knowledge to support and enable all aspects of the health system. With ISO membership spanning more than 160 countries and TC 215 including dozens of participating and observing nations, the committee’s work guides how health systems, researchers, and vendors worldwide manage and use health information.

Key themes and technical focus for the 2025 meeting

Working and expert sessions will concentrate on high-priority topics shaping digital health now and into the future, including:

• Patient summaries and clinical content standards (ISO 27269; PS-CA adoption)
• Privacy, security, and trust in cloud-based health environments
• Safe, accountable, and transparent application of artificial intelligence in health informatics
• Virtual care and remote patient monitoring
• Genomics and precision medicine
• Medication safety and electronic prescribing
• Federated networks, large datasets, and secure data sharing
• Quality, certification, and consent frameworks for health apps and software-as-a-medical-device

• Underpins Infoway’s Interoperability Roadmap (patient summaries, terminology, privacy, security, artificial intelligence, digital therapeutics).
• Drives the Patient Summary content standard (ISO 27269:2021) and its Canadian application via PS-CA.
• Supports Infoway and CIHI with standards advice, implementation guidance, and an accessible pool of expert consultants.
• Enables safer, consent-aware digital health systems through security, consent, and app-quality standards (e.g., ISO 27799, ISO 17975, ISO 82304-2).
• Advances standards for artificial intelligence, federated networks, large datasets, and genomics to enable precision medicine and secure data sharing.
