Please join us on Thursday, June 25, 2026, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. ET, as Nikolai Ryzhikov, CTO of Health Samurai and co-lead of the SQL on FHIR working group, presents an intermediate tutorial on SQL on FHIR.
SQL on FHIR is on track to become part of FHIR core in R6, moving from concept to practical, cross-system implementations. Nikolai will take us from the basics through to the latest work, covering:
Introduction – what SQL on FHIR is: a simple specification that turns nested FHIR into flat, queryable tables, portable across ETL/ELT runners and databases, and verified by a shared test suite
ViewDefinitions – defining flat views with the five core functions (column, where, forEach, select, union); the same definitions run unchanged across different runners
SQLQuery resource and API – publishing, distributing and executing reusable queries: reports, quality measures, validation checks
Live demo – an open-source UI for building and debugging ViewDefinitions across multiple runners, and the end-to-end flow from FHIR data to dashboards (Grafana) and notebooks (Python/Jupyter)
Where it's heading – the path into FHIR R6 core
FHIR-to-OMOP – a new project using ViewDefinitions + ConceptMaps to map FHIR into the OMOP CDM, bringing the SQL-on-FHIR and OHDSI worlds together
Nikolai has been a FHIR contributor since 2012 and brings deep, hands-on experience with FHIR data at scale.
