Hi John,
Correct, the intensional valueset was created and published on the national server for the PCHDCF/ CACDI and by extension will apply to the CA Core + specification and other panCanadian specs where applicable. Therefore, the recommended binding for panCanadian use cases will be this valueset. Anil has confirmed that an alignment exercise between CA Core + and CA Baseline is either slated or underway.

With the intensional definition from SNOMED, the CIHI proposed value set will automatically pickup all subtypes of 394733009 |Medical Specialty (qualifier value)|, now and in the future.

On the other hand, the Ontario value set appears to be an enumerated subset which contains some content from the above mentioned sub-hierarchy and a handful of concepts from:

224891009 |Healthcare services (qualifier value)|
14679004 |Occupation (occupation)|

...as well as some non SNOMED codes.

It seems more practical (for Canadian implementers and Infoway) to manage all required specialties in a single sub-hierarchy. This seems to be the direction we are taking with the HealthcareProviderSpecialtyCode value set.

Hi Erik,

Thanks for flagging this, you’re absolutely right. The PractitionerSpecialty ValueSet hasn’t been migrated from the Terminology Gateway to Ontoserver. This particular ValueSet was jurisdictional (Ontario) in nature, and as such, was not included in the initial set of pan-Canadian ValueSets moved to Ontoserver.

We’re reviewing the list of jurisdictional ValueSets referenced in the CA Baseline to determine which ones could be republished as pan-Canadian under the national structure.

The Ontario ValueSet(Subset) was extensional, but I believe CIHI is proposing an intentional.

Hi Erik,

Just a note that the panCanadian recommendation in the PCHDCF is HealthcareProviderSpecialtyCode which is a SNOMED based valueset that does exist on the OntoServer. This value set has been incorporated into the CA-Core+.

You can explore the health data content standard and architecture at www.cihi.ca/en/connected-care/canadas-health-data-content-standard-and-architecture . The standard is currently in an Open Review phase and we would welcome your comments.

Best regards,

Hello,

I was searching for fhir.infoway-inforoute.ca/ValueSet/practitionerspecialty on the terminology server, but it looks like it was not transferred from the tgateway to ontoserver. Would it be possible to add it, so that the redirectionf from tgateway.infoway-inforoute.ca/vs/practitionerspecialty works again?

CA baseline reference : build.fhir.org/ig/HL7-Canada/ca-baseline/ValueSet-practitionerspecialty.html

Many thanks,
Erik
