After the last HL7 Canada call and the discussion about the HL7 International Gender Harmony call, a few of us met off-line to discuss next steps pertaining to this work in Canada.

The participants in the off-line call were Ron Parker (HL7 Canada Affiliate Chair), Dr. Francis Lau (U Vic), Finnie Flores and Erin Pichora (CIHI), Smita Kachroo and Andrea MacLean (Infoway) and Jeff Nesbitt (CHIMA).

Here is the summary of the outcome of that discussion:
• The scope of the work at HL7 International is very constrained and may not reflect the size and scope of work that needs to be done in Canada with clinician and members of the LGBTQ community
o Canada will continue to participate and monitor the discussions at HL7 and try to influence them where we can, but we recognize that there is more work to do
• It was recognized that this is a problem that needs to be solved clinically and HL7 Canada is not the “home” of this work, but the HL7 Canada community will work to support this work with the related standards and expertise as required

If you have any questions about this at all, please let me know. And if so, we can also work with Ron Parker to discuss at the next community call.

Thank you.

Regards,

Andrea
